State Inspection Information In Roanoke Rapids, NC

The State Inspection is a yearly responsibility of being a vehicle owner. You might see it as a hassle, and put it off as long as possible, but why are State Inspections required every year? State Inspections have been instituted to ensure safety systems operate effectively on all vehicles and to ensure a vehicle’s emissions system efficiently reduces ozone emissions. Passing the North Carolina State Inspection is required for all vehicles less than 35 years old. Continue reading to learn more about the State Inspection.

You will need to go to a Certified Inspection Station to have your State Inspection performed. These State-certified service stations are qualified to test, diagnose, and pass/fail your vehicle for the North Carolina State Inspection. Schedule a State Inspection today with our service technicians at Nissan of Roanoke Rapids or pick from a list of 7,500 licensed inspection stations.

The State Inspection is made up of two parts. The vehicle safety inspection is the first part. This part inspects all vehicle safety systems to ensure they are in correct working order. Parts checked during this inspection include your vehicle’s windshield wipers, steering, parking brake, foot brake, turn signals, headlights, and accessory lights. Cars 35 years or older are exempt from the safety inspection.

The vehicle emissions inspection is the second part of the inspection process. A passing emissions inspection is required if you live in one of these 48 counties. This inspection serves to ensure your vehicle’s emissions systems are working effectively in reducing the amount of ozone-forming emissions that are being released into the atmosphere. Your vehicle’s computerized onboard diagnostic system will be analyzed by service technicians to verify your system is in a suitable condition. An On-Board Diagnostic emissions inspection is not required by vehicles meeting the following conditions – model year 1995 or older, diesel operated vehicles and vehicles licensed under the farmer rate.

Regardless of whether your car passes or fails the inspection, you will need to pay your fees! Prior to arrival, contact your inspection station for acceptable forms of payment at their location. Inspection fees should be the same wherever you go since State Inspection fees are set by the State. The Safety Inspection Fee is $13.60, and the On-Board Diagnostic Emissions Inspection Fee, which includes the Safety Inspection Fee, is $30.00.

At the time of inspection, you will no longer receive an inspection sticker – North Carolina State Inspections have gone electronic! Your State Inspection is electronically added to your vehicle’s registration record and can be accessed through the Department of Motor Vehicle’s database. Your State Inspection is tied to your vehicle’s registration renewal and must occur within 90 days of registration renewal.
